Police and the Fentanyl Drug Problem in New Mexico

Introduction

The DEA is a drug police group. From 2023 to 2025, they let some fentanyl drugs enter New Mexico. They did this to find and catch the drug bosses.

Main Body

The DEA watched the drugs but did not take them. They wanted to find the big leaders of the drug groups. In June 2023, they saw 74,000 pills in Albuquerque. They did not stop the pills because they wanted to stop the whole group later.

One agent, David Howell, did not like this. He said fentanyl is very dangerous. He said the DEA must take the drugs immediately to keep people safe. He told the government that the DEA broke the rules.

The government looked at the problem in 2024. They said the DEA did not do anything wrong. The DEA says their work was legal. Now, the rules allow police to choose when to take the drugs.

Conclusion

The DEA says their plan was legal. Other people say the plan was dangerous for the city.

🕒 Time and Action

Look at how the text talks about the past. When we tell a story about things that already happened, we often add -ed to the action word.

Patterns from the text:

  • Watch → Watched
  • Want → Wanted
  • Look → Looked

Special Cases (Irregular): Some words change completely instead of adding -ed. These are very common in A2 English:

  • See → Saw
  • Say → Said
  • Do → Did

💡 The Word "BUT"

Use but to connect two opposite ideas. It is like a bridge between a 'Yes' and a 'No'.

Example from the story: "The DEA watched the drugs \rightarrow but \rightarrow did not take them."

(They did one thing, but they did NOT do the other.)
