New Rules for US Immigration

Introduction

US courts have new rules about immigration. These rules change how the government stops and removes people.

Main Body

Border officers can now stop people with green cards more easily. If the officer thinks the person did a crime, the person must prove they can enter the US.

Some people can now be sent back to their home countries faster. They do not need to see a judge first if they cannot prove they lived in the US for two years.

One judge stopped the government from arresting people at immigration courts. The judge also said the government cannot keep people in jail for more than 12 hours without a good reason.

The government is also taking away citizenship from some people. They do this if the person lied on their application.

Conclusion

The government wants more power to remove people. However, some judges want to protect the rights of the people.

💡 The 'Action' Pattern

In this text, we see how to talk about changes and rules. To reach A2, focus on how the government does things to people.

1. Simple Action Verbs Look at these words from the story. They are all about control:

  • Stop \rightarrow (halt someone)
  • Remove \rightarrow (take away)
  • Keep \rightarrow (hold/stay)

2. The 'Can' Power Notice how often we use CAN and CANNOT. This is how we describe permission or rules in English.

  • They can stop people... (It is allowed)
  • They cannot keep people... (It is not allowed)

3. Quick Vocabulary Shift Instead of hard words, remember these pairs:

  • Home country \rightarrow Where you are from
  • Application \rightarrow The official form you fill out
  • Right \rightarrow Something you are allowed to have/do
