Introduction

Governor Ron DeSantis closed the immigration center. People call this place 'Alligator Alcatraz'. All the people in the center are now gone.

Main Body

The center opened in June 2025. It helped the government send 22,000 people away. Some people say the prisoners were dangerous. Other people say they were not criminals.

🕒 Talking about the Past

In this story, we see words that tell us something already happened. To reach A2, you need to know how to change a word to show 'yesterday' or 'last year'.

The Pattern: Add -ed Most words just need two letters at the end to move to the past:

  • Open \rightarrow Opened
  • Help \rightarrow Helped
  • Call \rightarrow Called

The Exception: Irregular Words Some words are 'rebels'. They don't follow the -ed rule. You must memorize them:

  • Say \rightarrow Said
  • Spend \rightarrow Spent

Quick Tip When you see "was" or "were", the sentence is also in the past. Example: "The prisoners were dangerous."
