💡 The Power of "Could Not"

In this story, we see a pattern that is very useful for A2 learners: Could not.

We use this when someone was unable to do something in the past.

Look at these examples from the text:

  • Some children \rightarrow could not speak.
  • One girl \rightarrow could not write her name.

How to build it: Person + could not + action verb

Try imagining other situations:

  • The house was locked \rightarrow I could not enter.
  • The baby was asleep \rightarrow He could not talk.

Quick Tip: In daily English, we often say couldn't. It is the same thing!

  • Could not = Couldn't
