The adults moved to many cities since 2008. They did not go to doctors. The children did not go to school. This is why the government did not find them. The house had many trees, so neighbors did not see inside.

The 'Past Action' Pattern

Look at how we talk about things that already happened. In this story, we see a lot of words ending in -ed. This is how we usually change a word to show it is in the past.

The Pattern:

  • Arrest \rightarrow Arrested
  • Move \rightarrow Moved*
  • Live \rightarrow Lived*

(Note: If the word already ends in 'e', we just add 'd')

When the pattern breaks (The 'Special' Words)

Some words are rebels. They don't use -ed. You just have to memorize them. These are very common in A2 English:

  1. Go \rightarrow Went
    • Example: "Police went to a house."
  2. Do \rightarrow Did
    • Example: "They did not do anything wrong."
  3. Find \rightarrow Found
    • Example: "Police found sixteen children."

Quick Tip: Saying 'No' in the Past

To say something did NOT happen, use did not + the normal word. Do not use the past version of the word here!

Incorrect: They did not went. ✅ Correct: They did not go.
