The 'Past Action' Pattern

Look at these words from the story: hit, needed, said, did, fought, went.

In English, when we talk about things that happened before now, we change the verb.

1. The 'Regular' Change (Add -ed) Some words just need a little tail at the end:

  • Need → Needed*
  • Follow → Followed*

2. The 'Rule Breakers' (Change completely) Some words are rebels. You must memorize them:

  • Go → Went*
  • Say → Said*

3. The 'Stay the Same' (No change) Some words are lazy. They don't change at all:

  • Hit → Hit*

Quick Summary for A2: If you see these words, the story is NOT happening now. It is a memory or a report.
