The 'Past' Trick

Look at how the story talks about the game. We change words to show things already happened.

Action Words (Past)

  • beat \rightarrow beat (stays the same!)
  • play \rightarrow played
  • stop \rightarrow stopped
  • score \rightarrow scored
  • lose \rightarrow lost

Simple Rule: To talk about yesterday or a finished game, usually add -ed to the end of the word. Some words are 'rebels' and change completely (like lose \rightarrow lost).

The 'Not' Power

When we want to say something didn't happen in the past, we use a helper word: did not.

  • The US did not give visas.

Notice that after did not, the action word goes back to its normal, present form (give), NOT the past form (gave).

Wrong: did not gave \rightarrow Right: did not give
