The 'Want' Pattern

In this text, we see a very common way to talk about desires.

Pattern: [Person/Club] + want(s) + [Something/Someone]

  • Newcastle United wants players... → (The club is the boss here)
  • Barcelona wants Julian Alvarez. → (A specific target)
  • Some players want to leave. → (The players are the boss here)

Quick Tip: If it is one club (He/She/It), add an -sWants If it is many players (They), no -sWant

Action Words: Buying vs. Selling

Money moves in two directions in football:

  1. Buy (Get something new) \rightarrow Chelsea bought Geovany Quenda.
  2. Sell (Give something away for money) \rightarrow Tottenham wants to sell players.

Notice the change: Buy \rightarrow Bought (This happened in the past). Sell \rightarrow Sell (This is a plan for the future).
