Main Body

The group gave houses to men who did bad things. Some men taught children for many years after the group knew about the problems. The leaders said they must help these men.

Now the group owes $774 million to the victims. They want to sell 36 buildings to get money. But they do not have enough money to pay everyone.

In the past, the group gave many schools and lands to another group called EREA. They sold them for only $1. EREA has a lot of money, but they do not want to pay the victims.

Conclusion

The court must now decide if EREA must pay the money.

💸 The 'Money' Connection

In this text, we see a very common pattern for A2 learners: Action → Result using verbs of possession and exchange.

1. Giving and Taking

  • Gave (Past of Give) \rightarrow To hand something to someone.
  • Owes (Present) \rightarrow To need to pay money back.
  • Sell (Present) \rightarrow To give something to get money.

2. Simple Money Phrases

  • "To get money" \rightarrow To obtain cash.
  • "To pay everyone" \rightarrow To give money to all people.
  • "Enough money" \rightarrow The right amount (not too little).

3. The 'Past' Shift Notice how the story moves from the past to now:

  • Past: "The group gave houses..." (Finished action)
  • Now: "The group owes..." (Current situation)

Quick Tip: When talking about money, we usually use have, get, or pay.
