The 'Age' Pattern
In this text, we see a very common way to describe people using their age. This is a key skill for A2 English.
The Pattern: Number + - + year-old + Person
Look at these examples from the story:
- 7 → seven-year-old girl
- 22 → 22-year-old woman
- 48 → 48-year-old man
Why this is useful: Instead of saying "The girl who is seven years old," you can simply say "The seven-year-old girl." It turns the age into a description (like 'big' or 'happy').
Watch out! When you use this pattern before a person, we use dashes ( - ) and we do not add an 's' to the word "year".
❌ Wrong: 7-years-old girl ✅ Right: 7-year-old girl
Quick Shift → If you talk about the age after the person, the rule changes:
- "The girl is seven years old." (No dashes, add the 's').
