The "Who Wants What" Pattern

In this text, we see a common way to describe goals using the word want. This is a key building block for A2 English.

The Pattern: Person \rightarrow wants \rightarrow something/action

Examples from the text:

  • President Zelenskyy \rightarrow wants \rightarrow to talk
  • President Zelenskyy \rightarrow wants \rightarrow a meeting
  • President Putin \rightarrow wants \rightarrow land

Quick Tip for Beginners: When talking about one person (He/She/Zelenskyy), always add the -s to the word: wants.

Comparing opposite ideas:

  • Zelenskyy wants a meeting in Turkey.
  • Putin says he can meet in Moscow.

The word "wants" shows a dream or a need, while "says" shows a statement of fact.
