Vocabulary Learning

🕒 Talking about the Past

In the story, we see how to change words to show something happened yesterday or last week. Most words just need -ed at the end.

  • play \rightarrow played
  • practicing \rightarrow practiced (general rule)
  • want \rightarrow wanted
  • change \rightarrow changed

⚠️ The 'Rule-Breakers'

Some words are special. They don't follow the -ed rule. You just have to memorize them:

  • Win \rightarrow Won
  • Score \rightarrow Scored (This one follows the rule!)
  • Be (is/are) \rightarrow Was/Were

Example from text: "England won 1-0." \rightarrow Not 'winned'. "Tuchel was not happy." \rightarrow Not 'is' because the game is over.

🚩 Quick Tip: The 'Not' Pattern

To say something didn't happen in the past, use did not + the normal word:

did not+follow=did not follow\text{did not} + \text{follow} = \text{did not follow}

(Notice we don't say 'did not followed'!)
