Vocabulary Learning

The 'Got' Pattern

In this text, we see the word got used many times. For a beginner, this is the easiest way to say you received something or added someone to a group.

How it works:

  • University got players. \rightarrow (They received new members)
  • LSU got two players. \rightarrow (They added two people)

Simple Swap: If "got" feels too casual, you can use "received" or "obtained," but in daily English, got is the king of simplicity.

Describing Groups

Look at how the text lists people:

"These players include Cooper Newman and Mikey Vernon Jr."

When you have a big group but only want to name a few, use include.

Example: My friends include Sam and Leo. \rightarrow (I have more friends, but I am only naming these two).

Who wants what?

Ohio State wants to give him money.

Pattern: [Person/Place] \rightarrow wants to \rightarrow [Action]

  • I want to eat.
  • The school wants to win.
  • He wants to join.
