The 'Who' and the 'Do'

Look at these sentences:

  • They want to check voters.
  • They watch mail-in ballots.
  • They use special barcodes.

The Pattern: Subject (Who) \rightarrow Action (Do) \rightarrow Object (What).

Simple A2 Breakdown:

  1. They (The Government/DHS) \rightarrow want (Action) \rightarrow to check (The goal).
  2. They \rightarrow watch (Action) \rightarrow ballots (The thing).
  3. They \rightarrow use (Action) \rightarrow barcodes (The tool).

Key Word Bank for Beginners:

  • Check \rightarrow To look at something to see if it is correct.
  • Watch \rightarrow To look carefully at someone or something.
  • Use \rightarrow To do something with a tool.

Quick Tip: In English, we almost always need the 'Who' (They, I, The government) before the 'Do' (watch, use, check). You cannot just say 'Watch ballots' if you are writing a full sentence.
