The 'Can' and 'Cannot' Logic

In this story, we see how to talk about ability (what someone is able to do) and possibility.

The Pattern:

• Can $\rightarrow$ Yes / Possible
• Cannot (Can't) $\rightarrow$ No / Impossible

Examples from the text:

• "He cannot play" $\rightarrow$ He is hurt, so it is impossible for him to play.
• "He could not" $\rightarrow$ This is the past version. He tried to get better, but it didn't happen.

Quick Rule for A2: Use cannot when a rule or a physical problem (like an injury) stops someone from doing an action.

Time Shift: Now vs. Then

Look at how the story moves from the past to the future:

1. Past $\rightarrow$ "Endo played 73 games" (Finished action).
2. Present $\rightarrow$ "Japan is in Group F" (Current fact).
3. Future $\rightarrow$ "He will stop playing" (A plan for later).
