Vocabulary Learning

The "Past vs. Future" Switch

In this story, the writer jumps between things that already happened and things that will happen. For A2 learners, this is the most important pattern to master.

1. The Past (Finished) When the game is over, we add -ed or use special words:

  • play \rightarrow played
  • win \rightarrow won
  • lose \rightarrow lost

Example: "North Carolina won 6-2." (The game is finished).

2. The Future (Coming Soon) When the game hasn't started, we use will:

  • will play
  • will win

Example: "Oklahoma will play Alabama soon." (The game is in the future).

Quick Tip: If you see the word "Now", the story is moving from the past into the present or future.

  • Past: They played. \rightarrow Now: We wait.
