Introduction

This report talks about two different legal cases. One case is in Bristol and one case is in Australia.

Main Body

In Bristol, a 16-year-old boy is in court. A 9-year-old girl, Aria Thorpe, died in December 2025. The boy says he did not kill her. The police say he hurt her during a game. The girl had a wound in her heart and lung.

🛑 The 'Not' Rule

To move to A2, you must know how to say "no" in a sentence. We use not to change a fact.

Look at these examples from the text:

  • He did not kill her. \rightarrow (He is innocent)
  • He was not guilty. \rightarrow (The court agreed he is innocent)
  • The trial is not finished. \rightarrow (It is still happening)

How it works: Put not after the helper word (did, is, was).

Positive: The trial is finished. Negative: The trial is not finished.


⏳ Past vs. Now

Notice how we talk about things that already happened:

  • died (happened in 2025)
  • looked (happened in the past)
  • treated (happened in the past)

Just add -ed to the action word to tell the reader the story is over.
