Vocabulary Learning

The 'Opposite' Trick

Look at how the story talks about the teams. We can use well and badly to describe how people do things.

  • Good Action \rightarrow playing well
  • Bad Action \rightarrow playing badly

Wait! Why not 'good'? In A2 English, we use good for things (a good game) but well for actions (they played well).

The 'Not' Switch If you don't want to say 'badly', you can use did not + a positive word:

  • They played badly \rightarrow They did not play well
  • Greenville scored few points \rightarrow Greenville did not score many points

Quick Examples from the Text:

  1. "The BlueClaws... are playing well."
  2. "The Drive... are playing badly."
