Health officials in the United States and Australia have released the last groups of passengers who were quarantined after a hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius.

The health crisis began on the MV Hondius during a trip through the South Atlantic, and it is believed that a Dutch couple was first exposed in South America. The virus, known as the Andes virus, is usually spread when people breathe in dust contaminated by rodent waste, although it can rarely spread from person to person. This outbreak led to thirteen confirmed cases and three deaths. After the ship arrived in the Canary Islands, a large evacuation took place, and many passengers and crew members had to be isolated in different countries.

In the United States, eighteen citizens were taken to a quarantine unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. They were held for 42 days because that is the maximum time it takes for the virus to show symptoms. While ten people were allowed to go home early for monitoring, eight others stayed until the end. However, the process was not without conflict. One passenger, Angela Perryman, described her detention as a 'political stunt.' She claimed that she was kept in isolation because federal officials required 24-hour surveillance, but Florida state officials refused to provide it.

These individuals, including citizens from Australia and New Zealand, showed no symptoms and consistently tested negative for the virus. Their quarantine ended after the 42-day period, which was calculated from their arrival on May 12. Consequently, both the U.S. and Australian governments have now helped these individuals return to their homes.
