Treasurer David Janetzki has announced that approximately $394.4 million in additional funding will be provided for mental health services in the state budget.

This funding comes from the Mental Health Levy, a payroll tax introduced in 2023. Although the levy collected $1.2 billion in its first 18 months—which was $553 million more than expected over five years—the Queensland Audit Office (QAO) found serious management problems. Specifically, the QAO reported that the previous government did not provide enough oversight. Consequently, some of the money was spent on other areas, such as the Department of Justice and the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, instead of mental health.

In response to these mistakes and pressure from the Australian Medical Association Queensland, which claimed there was a $600 million funding gap, the Crisafulli government has promised to use all levy money strictly for mental health. This funding will be used to hire 53 specialist doctors for emergency departments and provide 30 new hospital beds for mothers and newborns. Furthermore, this plan is part of a larger health strategy that includes $24.3 billion for daily operations and $18 billion for new buildings and equipment.
