Chinese government authorities have started an official investigation after reports claimed that several brands of baby diapers contain harmful chemicals.

The investigation was caused by a report from the Economic Information Daily, which claimed that products from Huggies, Babycare, and Bibabebe contained formamide. This man-made chemical is used in industry, but it is considered dangerous in some countries because it can affect reproduction and cause skin irritation or dizziness. Consequently, the State Administration for Market Regulation has created a special team, including health experts, to check these claims and ensure the companies are following the law.

In response, the companies involved have stated that new tests by independent laboratories showed no formamide in their products. Furthermore, Huggies has started legal action, asserting that the reports are false and intended to damage their reputation. This situation is particularly sensitive because of past safety scandals in China, such as the 2008 contaminated milk powder crisis. It is not yet clear if the affected products were sold in other countries.
