Additionally, regional violence caused by the Allied Democratic Force has blocked access to several villages and forced about 2 million people to leave their homes. The UN refugee agency emphasized that people in displacement camps, such as Kigonze, are extremely vulnerable to the virus.

Meanwhile, the Japanese government has provided an emergency grant of $3.5 million to improve healthcare and sanitation in the region.
