Australian law enforcement agencies have carried out the largest cocaine seizure in the country's history, recovering 2.7 tonnes of the drug in western Sydney.

The seizure took place on June 19 at a property in Londonderry. Authorities found the drugs hidden in plastic tubs inside underground bunkers, which were accessed through false floors in three shipping containers. This operation, called Operation Minjiang, was led by the Queensland Joint Organised Crime Taskforce (QJOCTF) and involved several different agencies. The estimated street value of the drugs is A$816 million, which represents about three million individual sales.

This investigation began in May after 40 kilograms of cocaine were found near Midge Point, North Queensland, next to a burnt-out truck. This initial discovery caused a series of searches across Queensland and New South Wales. Investigators claim that the cocaine was brought in by a foreign ship at Midge Point and then transported by road to Sydney. A cargo ship from Belize, the MV Wealth, is suspected of being the main transport vessel and is currently held in the Solomon Islands.

Two men, aged 21 and 25, were arrested at the Londonderry site and charged with possessing a large commercial quantity of illegal drugs, a crime that can lead to life imprisonment. Additionally, six other people were previously charged, including a woman who managed a safehouse and a man extradited to Queensland for helping with the transport. This case highlights how international gangs use Pacific Island transit points to reach the expensive Australian market.
