Deutsche Bahn stopped all rail operations on Tuesday evening after a technical problem occurred within its digital communication system.

The shutdown was caused by a failure of the Global System for Mobile Communications–Railway (GSM-R). This is a standard European wireless system used since 2000 to allow train drivers and control centers to exchange essential voice and data. Although CEO Evelyn Palla first stated that the exact cause was unclear, the company later emphasized that the problem had been identified, even though they did not share the specific details.

Services began to return slowly; for example, the Berlin commuter network resumed movement about two hours after the incident. However, the company warned that delays and cancellations would likely continue until Wednesday morning. This event happens at a time when the state-owned operator is facing heavy criticism for poor punctuality. Consequently, the company has started major infrastructure projects to fix years of underinvestment. It is important to note that while previous total shutdowns were usually caused by bad weather, this event was a rare case of a total halt caused by a technical failure.
