French authorities have started a legal investigation after two young children were found dead in a car during a period of extreme heat.

The incident took place at a home in the Bois de l'Ubac area of Carpentras. Two children, aged two and four, were found unconscious inside a car parked in a garage. At first, it seemed the children had entered the car without their 33-year-old mother noticing. However, the mother gave several conflicting statements, which led the police to open a manslaughter investigation. Hélène Mourges, the prosecutor of Carpentras, emphasized that while the high temperature is the most likely cause of death, medical exams are still continuing. The mother has not been questioned yet because she is currently unstable.

This tragedy happened during a wider climate crisis, with record-breaking temperatures across France. The national average reached 29.2°C, making it the third hottest day on record. Some regions experienced extreme peaks, such as 43.3°C in the Cher department and 40.6°C in Rennes. Consequently, this heatwave has caused at least 18 deaths, including three elderly people who died in their homes. Because of this, 54 departments were put on high alert, and about 39 million people received 'red alert' warnings as temperatures were expected to hit 43°C on June 22.
