Türkiye is set to host the 36th NATO Summit on July 7-8, 2026, in Ankara. This event will bring together leaders from member states and various international delegations.

The Turkish government views hosting this summit as a sign that Türkiye is moving from being a secondary member to a central strategic player within the alliance. Communications Director Burhanettin Duran emphasized that Türkiye's role has evolved; instead of focusing only on border security, the country is now more involved in the alliance's main decision-making processes. Consequently, the administration asserts that Türkiye now acts as a diplomatic facilitator and a stabilizer during regional crises to help maintain peace.

Key topics on the agenda will include new security threats, such as cyber defense, energy security, and the protection of essential infrastructure. Additionally, the summit will address the ongoing issue of how member states share financial responsibilities. To support this, Türkiye has set a target for defense spending of 3.5% plus 1.5% by 2030. Furthermore, a new Defense Industry Forum will be held to show how Türkiye's own military production can strengthen the alliance's overall capabilities.

To ensure the event runs smoothly, the government has organized extensive security and logistics. More than 56,000 security personnel will be deployed, including 639 officers specializing in cyber surveillance. According to NATO rules, the leaders' meetings will be private, and the media will only have access to the opening remarks by Secretary-General Mark Rutte. The state broadcaster, TRT, will manage the global broadcast using a wide network of cameras.
