Global health organizations are finishing their monitoring activities after an outbreak of Andes hantavirus occurred on the cruise ship MV Hondius.

The outbreak began in early May on the MV Hondius after it left Argentina, resulting in 13 confirmed cases and three deaths. Unlike other hantaviruses, which are usually spread through rodent waste, the Andes virus is rare and can spread from person to person. Consequently, 94 passengers from 19 different countries had to be evacuated from the ship.

Several countries coordinated their response to manage the risk. In Canada, Health Canada monitored 34 people; one person tested positive but later recovered, while others finished their isolation. Similarly, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC ended their operations after the last eight American passengers completed a 42-day quarantine. The CDC emphasized that there was no widespread community transmission in the U.S. and stated that the public risk was very low.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) managed the global effort, tracking more than 650 contacts in 33 countries. Although most people have finished their monitoring, a small group will remain under observation until July 2. Furthermore, scientists are still trying to find the original source of the infection. While the CDC's initial rodent tests in Argentina were negative, the WHO is now analyzing environmental samples and leading a study across 21 countries to better understand the virus and develop future treatments.
