The French Navy has detained an oil tanker called the Deliver, which flies the Cameroon flag, off the coast of Sicily because they suspect the ship was avoiding international sanctions.

The interception took place on Tuesday and is the fifth operation of this kind by French authorities in recent months. President Emmanuel Macron and Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin emphasized that the ship, which came from Primorsk, Russia, is part of a 'shadow fleet' used to bypass sanctions and support the Russian military economy. Furthermore, the French government claimed that the ship's use of a Cameroonian flag was fake, and they have sent this case to the Marseille prosecutor's office for a legal review.

On the other hand, the Russian Embassy in Paris described the seizure as an illegal act of piracy. The embassy asserted that diverting a foreign ship to port in international waters violates the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Additionally, the Russian mission argued that EU sanctions are not legitimate because they were not authorized by the UN Security Council. They also noted that no Russian citizens were members of the crew during the incident.
