The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has banned Kenyan distance runner Kibiwott Kandie for seven years after he committed several anti-doping violations.

The legal process began on March 1, 2025, when Mr. Kandie blocked a drug test at his home in Kenya. Although he was warned about the consequences of not cooperating, the athlete delayed and eventually refused to provide a sample, claiming he had an urgent bank transaction to handle. As a result, he was given a temporary suspension on March 14, 2025.

Later, an investigation with the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya found several suspicious activities. The AIU checked phone and bank records and discovered eleven payments to a nurse in the year before the test. Furthermore, Kenyan authorities confirmed that Mr. Kandie had provided fake documents to justify his actions. Consequently, he was charged with refusing to provide a sample and attempting to interfere with the doping control process.

Originally, the AIU proposed an eight-year ban, split between the two violations. However, because the athlete accepted the sanctions early, the ban was reduced by one year. The final seven-year suspension started from his initial suspension and will last until March 13, 2032. This is a major blow to the sport, as Mr. Kandie is a three-time Valencia Half Marathon champion and one of the fastest runners in history.
