The British Royal Household has revealed the personal tax payments of King Charles III and Prince William. This announcement comes alongside changes to the Sovereign Grant and the way Buckingham Palace is being used.

The decision to share personal tax details is a major change from the past. These payments come from private properties, such as Sandringham and Balmoral, and the Duchy of Lancaster. Similarly, Prince William disclosed a tax payment of £7.76 million for the same period. The Royal Household emphasized that these steps are part of a modernization effort to be more open. However, some analysts argue that because full tax returns are not available, it is impossible to know the exact tax rates being paid. Furthermore, the Duchy of Lancaster does not pay certain corporate taxes, which allows it to grow its wealth without tax on rental income.

The Treasury confirmed that a mechanism called the 'golden ratchet' will remain in place, ensuring that the basic level of the grant does not drop further in the future.

Additionally, the Duchy of Cornwall is changing its investments by selling a 600-acre farm and using rental income from a former prison for community projects. These changes happen while profits from the Crown Estate have fallen to £487 million due to lower fees from offshore wind projects.
