The FIA and several car manufacturers are currently discussing the technical rules for 2031. Their main goals are to create simpler engines and reduce the overall weight of the cars.

There is a disagreement between the FIA and some manufacturers regarding engine technology. Mercedes agrees with this idea; however, Audi prefers turbocharged engines because they are more relevant to the cars people drive on the road. To solve this, a 2.4-litre turbocharged V8 has been suggested as a compromise.

At the same time, the FIA wants to reduce the car's weight to around 700kg, or possibly as low as 630kg. To achieve this, they are considering bringing back refueling during races. This would allow cars to have smaller fuel tanks, which could lower the starting weight by over 50kg. Nevertheless, some people oppose this because it goes against sustainability goals, as refueling requires more equipment to be transported to the tracks.

Finally, the cost and performance of the engines are key issues. Switching to a simpler V8 could lower engine costs from €1.5 million to €700,000. To ensure stable performance, experts suggest limiting the KERS power to 10-20% of the engine's total output. While the FIA can decide these rules alone, they would need an agreement from at least four of the six main manufacturers to start these changes early in 2030.
