President Donald Trump has announced that Lance Schroyer, an experienced law enforcement official from Oklahoma, has been nominated to serve as the Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

He is particularly experienced in 287(g) programs, which allow state and local officers to handle federal immigration duties. Consequently, the administration emphasizes that his expertise makes him the right choice to carry out strict detention and deportation goals.

ICE has faced a lack of stable leadership, as it has not had a Senate-confirmed director since 2017. Instead, the agency has been led by several acting officials, most recently David Venturella. This leadership gap has continued even as the agency grew significantly, receiving $75 billion in funding to hire 12,000 new officers.

Furthermore, fatal shootings of U.S. citizens in Minnesota have caused nationwide protests and claims that civil liberties were violated. While the administration asserts that these measures are necessary for security, Democratic lawmakers have tried to limit funding unless stricter oversight and rules against racial profiling are adopted.
