A U.S. Marine disappeared during a training exercise off the coast of Southern California, which led to a large search operation involving several different agencies.

The incident happened during joint training exercises involving the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group. The missing person was based on the USS Anchorage, a transport ship. Search operations began around 01:20 on Thursday, using three ships and twelve aircraft. This coordinated effort included personnel from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force, covering an area of about 2,400 square miles.

After 43 hours of searching for the survivor, the Navy changed the mission to a recovery operation at 21:00 on Friday. The identity of the service member has not been released yet because the military must first notify the family. Furthermore, this is the second time in six weeks that military personnel have gone missing, following the recovery of two Army soldiers in Morocco in May. The Navy emphasized that an investigation into the cause of the disappearance is currently underway.
