Report on Maritime Rescue Operations in the Pacific and North American Coasts
太平洋及北美海岸海上救援行動報告
Introduction
Emergency services carried out two separate rescue operations involving several people in the waters near Oahu, Hawaii, and the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia.
緊急服務部門在夏威夷歐胡島與卑詩省喬治亞海峽附近水域,進行了兩次涉及多人的獨立救援行動。
Main Body
In the first case, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) and the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department (HOSD) worked together to rescue twenty people after three outrigger canoes overturned about one mile from Hanauma Bay. The operation began at 09:17 and included six HFD units, a rescue boat, and a helicopter. Additionally, the HOSD used two rescue Jet Skis to help. Reports stated that two boats were badly damaged, while one was still usable. This accident happened despite a weather warning that advised inexperienced sailors not to use small boats due to dangerous conditions. At the same time, HOSD staff handled several other ocean emergencies at Nanakuli, Makaha, Haleiwa, and Sunset Beach.
In a separate incident, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and the Canadian Coast Guard performed a search and rescue operation about ten miles southwest of Vancouver International Airport. After a civilian boat reported that some people were in the water without life jackets, several agencies were called to help. This included a Cormorant helicopter, a Kingfisher aircraft, a hovercraft, and assets from the Ganges Lifeboat Station. Furthermore, commercial ferry operators and the Marine Search and Rescue Auxiliary provided extra support. By 15:15, four people were taken to medical services; however, the CAF emphasized that the search for six other missing people is still active.
Conclusion
While the operation in Oahu ended with all twenty people being saved, the operation in British Columbia is still ongoing as rescuers continue to look for six missing persons.
雖然歐胡島的行動以二十人全部獲救告終,但卑詩省的行動仍在進行中,救援人員繼續搜尋六名失蹤者。
Vocabulary Learning
The 'Connector' Leap: Moving Beyond 'And' & 'But'
At the A2 level, you likely use and, but, and because for everything. To reach B2, you need to use Transition Markers. These are words that tell the reader how two ideas relate, making your English sound professional and fluid.
⚡ The 'Adding' Upgrade
Instead of repeating and or also, look at how the report expands information:
- Additionally... (Used when adding a new, similar piece of information)
- Furthermore... (Used to add a more important or stronger point)
Example from text: "Additionally, the HOSD used two rescue Jet Skis..." This signals to the reader: "I have told you about the boats and helicopters; now here is one more detail."
⚡ The 'Contrast' Shift
A2 students use but. B2 students use However or Despite.
1. The 'However' Pivot Used to show a conflict between two complete sentences.
- A2 Style: They saved four people, but they are still looking for six.
- B2 Style: Four people were taken to medical services; however, the search for six other missing people is still active.
2. The 'Despite' Barrier This is a high-level move. Despite is followed by a noun (a thing), not a full sentence. It shows that something happened even though there was a reason for it not to happen.
- Structure: Despite + [Noun/Fact], [Main Action].
- Text Analysis: "This accident happened despite a weather warning..."
🚀 Practical Application for You
To bridge the gap, stop starting sentences with But. Try this logic flow instead:
| A2 Logic | B2 Transition | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| I like the city, but it is noisy. | I enjoy the city; however, the noise is overwhelming. | More formal/precise. |
| I studied hard and I passed. | I studied hard. Furthermore, I attended every class. | Adds weight to the claim. |
| It rained but we went out. | Despite the rain, we went out. | Sounds like a native speaker. |
