Law enforcement agencies are currently investigating Miranda’s Rescue Animal Sanctuary in Fortuna, California, after discovering many dead dogs and receiving reports of fraudulent business practices.

The investigation began in April following reports of animal abuse. Furthermore, investigators found a barn containing over 600 collars and blood stains, which they believe was the location where the animals were killed. These deaths are estimated to have happened between January and April of this year.

However, there are serious problems with the records: of the 918 dogs brought to the facility since January 2025, only 116 adoptions were confirmed and 71 animals are still alive. This means 731 dogs are missing. Consequently, this suggests that the sanctuary's claim of being a 'no-kill' shelter was false.

On the other hand, the Sheriff's Office, the FBI, and state agencies are analyzing data to decide if criminal charges for fraud and cruelty are necessary. Meanwhile, several partner shelters in the Bay Area have already stopped working with the sanctuary.
