European Public Prosecutor's Office Starts Searches Into Misuse of EU Funds

Introduction

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has started coordinated searches in several EU countries to investigate claims that the former Identity and Democracy (ID) parliamentary group misused public funds.

Main Body

These legal actions are taking place in France, Belgium, Italy, and Spain. The EPPO is investigating the suspected theft of approximately 4.3 million euros between 2019 and 2024. The investigation focuses on the Identity and Democracy group, which was a coalition of Euroskeptic parties including France's National Rally (RN), Italy's League, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPO), and Germany's AfD. Jordan Bardella, the leader of the RN, confirmed that officials searched the homes and offices of communication contractors who worked for the party.

Furthermore, these events happen while EU authorities and right-wing nationalist parties are experiencing increased tension. For example, Germany's intelligence services have labeled the AfD as a 'right-wing extremist' group. Similarly, the FPO in Austria has been blocked from forming a government after its 2024 election success. In France, the National Rally faces leadership challenges because Marine Le Pen may be banned from public office for five years due to a separate case involving the misuse of EU funds. Consequently, Jordan Bardella might have to run in the next presidential election instead.

Conclusion

The EPPO is continuing its investigation into the ID group's finances, while the National Rally claims that these actions are politically motivated.

⚡ The "Cause and Effect" Leap

At an A2 level, students usually connect ideas with simple words like and, but, or because. To reach B2, you need to use Logical Connectors that guide the reader through a complex argument.

Look at how the text moves from a fact to a result:

*"Marine Le Pen may be banned... Consequently, Jordan Bardella might have to run..."

The Magic Word: Consequently Instead of saying "So," use Consequently. It signals a formal, logical result. It tells the listener: "Because Action A happened, Result B is now inevitable."

🧩 Upgrading Your Vocabulary: From 'Simple' to 'Precise'

B2 speakers don't just use general words; they use specific terminology to describe a situation. Let's transform A2 phrasing into B2 phrasing using the text as a map:

A2 Way (General)B2 Way (Precise)Context from Text
Looking intoInvestigating"...investigate claims that..."
Wrong use of moneyMisuse of funds"...misused public funds."
Bad feeling/FightingIncreased tension"...experiencing increased tension."

🔍 The Power of the Passive Voice

Notice this sentence: "...the FPO in Austria has been blocked from forming a government..."

Why this is B2: An A2 student would say: "Someone blocked the FPO." But in professional English, the action (being blocked) is more important than who did it. By using "has been blocked," the writer sounds more objective and academic. This is a key requirement for B2 fluency: shifting focus from the person to the event.
