NASA has released a progress report on the Moon Base program and has started recruiting people for deep space simulations.

The Moon Base project began in March 2026 and is expected to finish its first phase by 2029. This stage is necessary before NASA can establish a permanent human base on the Moon. Although Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket failed during a ground test in May, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized that the launch plan for the Mark 1 lunar lander has not changed. To ensure the mission succeeds, NASA is also developing other landers, such as the Astrobotic Griffin and Intuitive Machines Nova-C. Furthermore, the agency has signed new contracts for advanced scientific tools, including radiation sensors and dust-mapping cameras.

At the same time, NASA is preparing for crewed missions. The Artemis III mission is still scheduled for 2027, with final practice runs expected by the end of 2026. One interesting change is the possible use of the Promise rover on the Moon. This rover was previously used on Earth to solve problems for Mars missions. NASA may add a nuclear power source to the rover so it can continue working during the lunar night, when solar power does not work.

To help astronauts prepare, NASA announced the Moon and Mars Exploration Analog mission, which will start around August 2027. This project combines previous simulation programs into one large test at the Johnson Space Center. Volunteers will live in small, isolated habitats for one year to simulate traveling through space and working on a planet's surface. Consequently, this will allow NASA to test both the equipment and the mental health protocols needed for a future mission to Mars.
