A group of 116 influential citizens from India and Pakistan has officially asked their governments to restore diplomatic ties and start talking again to improve relations between the two countries.

This initiative took the form of an open letter sent to Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif. The letter was signed by 61 Indians and 55 Pakistanis, including former diplomats and political leaders. These individuals argued for the return of High Commissioners, the normalization of visa services, and the restart of a full dialogue process, similar to the negotiations held between 2004 and 2007. They emphasized that continuous communication is the only effective way to ensure regional stability and reduce the economic and social costs of their long-term separation.

However, reactions within India are deeply divided. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) insists that Pakistan must stop sponsoring terrorism before any talks can happen, asserting that peace cannot be achieved by one side alone. Similarly, the Indian National Congress opposed the idea, pointing to Pakistan's history of aggression. They specifically mentioned the April 2025 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians, as proof that Pakistan cannot be trusted.

He suggested that dialogue should be used specifically to challenge Pakistan about its support for terrorist groups. Furthermore, MP Manoj Jha pointed out the contradiction of maintaining sports ties while blocking diplomatic and cultural exchanges. Despite these suggestions, the Indian government has denied any official 'back-channel' talks, stating that such reports are not valid.
