Syrian Transitional People's Assembly Formed After Presidential Appointments
Introduction
Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has finished choosing the 210 members of the People's Assembly, allowing the legislature to start its first session on Monday.
Main Body
The legislative system for this transitional period uses a mixed selection process. Two-thirds of the assembly were chosen through regional elections in October, while the remaining one-third were appointed by the president. This appointment method was used to fix representation problems, as the first elections resulted in very few women and minority groups being elected. Consequently, the president appointed 15 women, former prisoners, and survivors of chemical attacks, as well as various academics and professionals. Specifically, the government included representatives from the Alawite community and the Hasakah region to ensure a wider range of ethnic and religious groups.
However, institutional stability depends on solving regional security issues. In the southern province of Suweida, elections were stopped due to sectarian conflicts in July 2025; therefore, this region is currently represented only by presidential appointments. Similarly, elections in Raqqa and Hassakeh were delayed until government forces took control of these areas from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Despite these efforts, some groups have criticized the process. More than twenty Kurdish parties and fourteen civil society organizations have claimed that the system is flawed, asserting that the president's power to appoint members may reduce the assembly's independence.
From a diplomatic perspective, the United Nations has described the current transition as a time of both opportunity and risk. While the integration of SDF brigades into the state military shows some progress, the UN noted that there is a lack of trust-building measures in Suweida. The People's Assembly will serve a 30-month term. During this time, it must perform essential tasks, such as approving international treaties, passing the budget, and writing a new elections law to allow for future public votes.
Conclusion
The Syrian transitional parliament is now fully formed and ready to begin its work, although it faces ongoing security challenges and internal criticism regarding its electoral structure.

⚡ The 'Logical Glue' Shift
An A2 student says: "The elections had problems. The president appointed women."
A B2 student says: "The first elections resulted in representation problems; consequently, the president appointed women."
To move toward B2, you must stop using simple sentences and start using Connectors of Cause and Effect. These are the 'glue' that make your English sound professional and fluid.
🛠️ The Power-Up List
From the text, we can extract three sophisticated ways to link ideas:
-
Consequently (A2 version: So)
- Used when one event is the direct result of another.
- Example: "The system is flawed; consequently, some groups have criticized the process."
-
Therefore (A2 version: That's why)
- Used to introduce a logical conclusion.
- Example: "Elections were stopped... therefore, this region is represented by appointments."
-
Due to (A2 version: Because of)
- Used to point directly to the reason (usually followed by a noun).
- Example: "Elections were stopped due to sectarian conflicts."
💡 Pro-Tip for Fluency
Notice the punctuation! B2 English often uses a semicolon (;) before consequently or therefore. This tells the reader: "I am connecting two complete thoughts into one sophisticated idea."
Compare these two levels:
- A2: It was raining. I stayed home.
- B2: It was raining; therefore, I decided to stay home.
