Yorgen Fenech, a businessman from Malta, has started a trial regarding his alleged role in the 2017 murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Furthermore, the prosecution emphasized that Mr. Fenech provided over €400,000 to pay for the Degiorgio brothers' lawyers.

The event had a huge impact on politics; for example, the perceived failure of the government's investigation caused Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to resign in 2020. Additionally, a 2021 public inquiry concluded that the state was responsible for the death because of a system that allowed crimes to go unpunished. The defendant, who is currently under house arrest after paying a record bail of €50 million, continues to deny all charges.
