Santi Cazorla, the 41-year-old former international midfielder for Spain and Arsenal, has officially announced his retirement from professional football.

Cazorla's career lasted over twenty years and was marked by great success at both the club and international levels. While playing for Arsenal between 2012 and 2018, he won two FA Cup titles and played a key role in the 2014 final. Furthermore, he earned 81 caps for the Spanish national team and won two European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

However, his career was seriously affected by severe health problems. In 2016, an infection after surgery led to gangrene, which required eleven operations and a skin graft to save his leg. Although doctors predicted that he would never play again, he managed to overcome these challenges and return to professional sport.

He showed great generosity during this time; the club emphasized that he accepted the minimum salary and gave up his image rights. Additionally, he arranged for 10% of his jersey sales to go to the club's youth academy. Although he helped Oviedo reach the top division in 2025, the club was unfortunately relegated shortly after.
