Recent changes in the prices of silver and gold have happened at the same time as the release of US employment data and new expectations regarding the Federal Reserve's interest rate policies.

The price of silver has dropped significantly, falling from a high of $116.61 per ounce in January 2026 to $59.88 by July 2. Although this is a 48.6% decrease, the price is still higher than it was last July, when it was around $37 per ounce. Silver is generally more volatile than gold, meaning its price changes more quickly. However, both metals are used by investors to diversify their portfolios and protect against inflation, which is currently over 4%.

This increase was caused by a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing that only 57,000 jobs were added in June, which was much lower than the expected 114,000. Furthermore, lower employment numbers for April and May, along with a drop in the labor force participation rate to 61.5%, led the market to believe that the Federal Reserve might not raise interest rates. Consequently, the probability of a rate hike in September fell from 66% to 50%.

Additionally, a weaker US dollar has made gold and silver more affordable for international buyers. While Fed Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized a commitment to price stability, investors continue to buy gold when they expect interest rates to stay low.
