The Indian government's attempt to stabilize aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs through a voluntary compensation plan has failed to attract airlines. At the same time, Air India has decided to reduce its fuel surcharges for passengers.

The Union Cabinet previously approved a ₹10,000-crore plan to protect airlines from price changes caused by political instability in West Asia. This system aimed to pay state-owned oil companies to provide fuel at a maximum price of approximately ₹115 per litre for three years. The plan used a fixed benchmark of ₹86.32 per litre; if global prices rose above this level, the government would provide interest-free loans to retailers, which would then be paid back when prices dropped.

However, the plan has not been used because no airlines signed up for it. This happened because international oil prices fell after the United States and Iran improved their diplomatic relations, which reduced fears about the Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, market prices for fuel dropped to ₹110 per litre by July 1. This made the government's price cap of ₹115 unattractive, as airlines could get fuel cheaper on the open market.

Meanwhile, Air India has lowered fuel surcharges for several long-distance flights starting July 1. Surcharges for North America and Australia decreased from USD 280 to USD 200, while routes to Europe and the UK dropped from USD 205 to USD 125. These changes follow a period where operational costs rose sharply—caused by a nearly 100% increase in global jet fuel prices between February and March—and reflect the current decline in energy prices.
