The Union Pacific 4014, the world's largest working steam locomotive, recently traveled through Schuylkill and Berks counties as part of a nationwide trip ending in Philadelphia.

This locomotive is an impressive piece of machinery; built in 1941 to pull heavy freight across the Wasatch Mountains, it is 133 feet long, weighs 1.2 million pounds, and has 7,000 horsepower. Furthermore, it is the only working example of the twenty-five units originally built.

However, the large crowds faced extreme weather conditions. In Berks County, specifically at the Reading Outer Station, the heat index rose above 110 degrees. Consequently, this extreme heat caused over 35 medical emergencies, including one cardiac arrest and the treatment of a seven-year-old child.
