A deadly bombing at a cafe near the Palace of Justice in Damascus has killed ten people and injured about twenty others, representing a serious security failure in the Syrian capital.

The attack happened on Thursday at the Al-Mushairiya Cafe in the al-Hijaz district. According to the Syrian Ministries of Health and Interior, a homemade bomb containing metal pieces was placed inside the cafe. Among the victims were six lawyers, whose deaths were confirmed by the Syrian Bar Association. Although the Ministry of Interior denied reports of a suicide bomber, the governor of Damascus described the device as simple in design.

This incident occurs during a period of instability following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in December 2024. The new government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, has struggled to maintain full control over the country. Similar attacks have occurred recently, including a church bombing in June 2025 that killed twenty-five people—which authorities blamed on the Islamic State—and a car bombing at the Ministry of Defence in May.

Other security problems have also emerged. On Friday, a grenade attack at a checkpoint in Jaramana injured three security officers and killed the attacker, who was a wanted criminal. Furthermore, security forces stopped a bomb that had been placed on a passenger bus in the Al-Wurud area. While no group has claimed responsibility for the cafe bombing, some officials believe the violence is caused by supporters of the previous regime.
