Iran has started a week-long series of funeral ceremonies in several cities for the former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and some of his family members who died in February.

The former leader, an 86-year-old cleric who led the country for 37 years, was killed on February 28 during airstrikes by the U.S. and Israel. Because of fighting in March, these events were delayed and are now happening during a fragile ceasefire. The funeral processions will start at Tehran's Grand Mosalla, move to Qom, and then go to the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala. Finally, the burial will take place at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad on July 9.

To manage the expected 15 to 20 million mourners, the government has closed all offices in Tehran from July 4 to July 6. Furthermore, they have restricted airspace and banned private cars in the city center. The state has set up a large emergency network with medical universities and the Red Crescent, along with over 1,600 places to stay. Security is very high, as the National Security Council and the IRGC are patrolling the area to prevent any threats.

From a diplomatic perspective, the event is being used to strengthen ties with global allies. Officials from about 100 countries, including Russia, China, Pakistan, and Iraq, are expected to attend. However, the government has excluded European nations that supported the military strikes. While IRGC Commander Ahmad Vahidi will make his first public appearance in months, the current Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, will not appear because of health and security reasons following his own injuries in February.
