The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has warned the Pakistani government that incorrect restoration work at the Taxila archaeological site could lead to its removal from the World Heritage List.

The Department of Archaeology and Museums (DOAM) and the Punjab archaeology department are accused of replacing ancient stones with modern materials and, in some cases, making original walls higher. UNESCO described these changes as 'unnecessary interventions' that damage the historical authenticity of the site, which has been protected since 1980.

During an inspection on June 12, UNESCO officials emphasized that sites can be removed from the list, mentioning a similar case in Germany as a warning. However, Malik Zaheer Abbas, Director General of the Punjab archaeology department, disagreed with the claim that this was 'reconstruction.' He asserted that the work was simply intended to stabilize the structures and prevent them from falling apart, following standard conservation rules.

The Taxila site is historically vital because it shows the meeting of Vedic, Buddhist, and Greco-Buddhist civilizations across several ancient eras.
