The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will hold its 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government in Ankara, Türkiye, on July 7-8. The event takes place during a time of high security and diplomatic disagreement regarding defense spending.

The Turkish government has put strict security measures in place in Ankara to protect 52 leaders from 32 member nations and nine invited countries. Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci announced that 56,288 police and security officers will guard the Presidential Complex, the ATO Congresium, and main roads. While some roads are closed and there are temporary flight restrictions at Esenboga Airport, pedestrians can still move freely. Furthermore, 639 specialists are monitoring cybersecurity to prevent digital attacks.

At the same time, a serious disagreement has appeared regarding how much money each country spends on defense. President Donald Trump described the current system as 'one-sided,' noting that the U.S. spent $999 billion between 2014 and 2025, while the UK, France, Italy, and Poland spent much less. The U.S. administration also claimed that allies did not provide enough support during conflicts with Iran. Consequently, the President suggested that the U.S. might leave the alliance, although this would require approval from Congress.

In response, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that U.S. pressure has actually caused European and Canadian members to increase their spending by $1.2 trillion since 2017. He asserted that this trend supports about 195,000 American jobs. Similarly, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz rejected the idea that Germany is not contributing enough, stating that Germany is doubling its defense budget over four years. Meanwhile, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that the Ankara summit aims to strengthen the unity of the alliance and improve cooperation with Italy.
