EU Policy Goals During the Irish Presidency

Introduction

The European Union has started several important policy reviews and diplomatic meetings to mark the beginning of Ireland's six-month presidency of the Council of the EU.

Main Body

The Irish presidency has created a plan focused on competitiveness, shared values, and security. Prime Minister Micheál Martin emphasized that the EU must increase productivity and remove unnecessary regulations to improve economic growth. This plan includes speeding up the move toward green energy and integrating artificial intelligence. At the same time, President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted a serious housing crisis regarding cost and quality. Consequently, she proposed a European Housing Alliance and a high-level summit to help member states coordinate their responses.

Regarding international relations, the EU is dealing with difficult geopolitical tensions. President von der Leyen defended the EU's humanitarian aid to Gaza, noting that over €2.7 billion has been provided. However, she explained that member states have not agreed on whether to impose sanctions on Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir or change trade agreements with Israel. Meanwhile, the EU is helping Moldova join the union. President Maia Sandu stated that joining the EU is essential for strengthening democracy and peace, especially due to Russian interference. This process is supported by a €1.9 billion growth plan, provided that Moldova implements anti-corruption reforms.

Finally, the EU is managing several internal administrative issues. The Commission is currently fixing technical problems with the Entry/Exit System (EES) that have caused delays at borders. Furthermore, a proposal to limit social media access for children is waiting for an expert report. In terms of industry, a new energy package will be released in July to modernize emissions trading and increase the use of electricity, while the EU continues to negotiate with China to fix trade imbalances.

Conclusion

The European Union is currently trying to balance internal reforms and social crises with the challenges of expanding the union and managing unstable global relations.

🚀 Moving Beyond 'And' & 'But'

At the A2 level, students often connect ideas using simple words like and, but, or because. To reach B2, you must use Logical Connectors. These words act like road signs, telling the reader exactly how two ideas are linked.

🧩 The "Cause & Effect" Upgrade

In the text, we see the word Consequently.

  • A2 version: There is a housing crisis, so she proposed an alliance.
  • B2 version: There is a housing crisis. Consequently, she proposed a European Housing Alliance.

Why it works: "Consequently" is a formal way to say "as a result." It signals a professional, academic tone.

⚖️ The "Contrast" Shift

Instead of always using but, look at how the text uses However.

  • A2 version: The EU gives aid, but they don't agree on sanctions.
  • B2 version: Over €2.7 billion has been provided. However, member states have not agreed on sanctions.

Pro Tip: Notice the punctuation. "However" usually starts a new sentence and is followed by a comma. This creates a sophisticated pause that B2 speakers use to emphasize a contradiction.

➕ The "Adding Information" Tool

When you want to add a new point, don't just say and. Use Furthermore.

  • A2 version: There are technical problems and there is a social media proposal.
  • B2 version: The Commission is fixing technical problems. Furthermore, a proposal to limit social media access is waiting.
