Police in Westlake, Ohio, have arrested two men for their involvement in a complex financial scam that targeted an elderly woman.

The fraud began in August 2025 when the victim, a 78-year-old woman, saw a fake computer alert claiming her system had been hacked. This message told her to call a phone number that claimed to be for the FBI. The scammers then told her a complicated story about international cyberattacks and a dead undercover agent to make themselves seem official. Consequently, they convinced her to change her cash into gold, claiming the government would keep it safe during the investigation.

Over several months, the suspects collected gold from the woman's home, totaling about $200,000. However, the situation changed in March 2026. The victim contacted the police after a gold merchant became suspicious and the scammers demanded 80% of her retirement savings.

To catch the criminals, the Westlake Police Department organized a 'controlled delivery.' They used fake gold, forged documents, and drones to track the suspects. This operation led to the arrest of Manan Shah and Ankit Gupta. During questioning, both men claimed they did not know about the fraud and asserted that they were simply picking up packages.
